I would legit, no BS pay for the original PS3s asking price for a super reliable, new model. I say this only because I highly doubt Sony would make a new PS console with full backwards compatibility. Access to old games as a service is already happening and gaining momentum, leaving the thought of backwards compatibility into obscurity.

Ps3 Slim playing ps2 games. PS3 Slims use Software Emulation to play PS2 Games which is not the same as PS2 Hardware Backwards Compatible PS3's. PS2 Games in the Software Emulation list below that have Major Issues or are Unplayable will play fine on a PS2 Hardware Backwards Compatible PS3, but won't on a PS3 Slim using Software Emulation.

Current generation "Slim" PS3's have software backwards compatibility. They won't play any PS2 games, but they'll most PSX games. The 60GB launch PS3, however, most certainly will, due to it's hardware backwards compatibility, as you know. Since this PS3 has the guts of the PS2 inside it, firmware updates do NOT affect it's compatibility.
