You could roam around for 20 minutes before finding out. If you are at ward 13 then ppl will come in right away I think from what I saw.
To join your friends in Remnant, click on Join Game, then click the first button at the top that reads Friends Games. Otherwise, you can choose from the plethora of Public Games available. It's worth keeping in mind that joining a game in progress will likely spawn you away from the fight, requiring the players already in the thick of it to
